Term 2 Art Junior Infants
Below are some of the art and craft activities that the children in Junior Infants have completed so far in Term 2.
One of our main themes in the classroom in January was 'Homes and Houses'. We were lucky enough for Santa Claus himself to send us pictures of some houses he had taken on his journey around the world this Christmas eve. We looked at the many different types of houses in Ireland and around the world. We read the story of the three little pigs.We completed a number of drawing and writing activities based on this theme.
We did writing and colouring about Saint Brigid after we learned about her in our Grow in Love Programme.
We made a Valentines card for our parents for Valentines day.
We also made a 2d shape picture using circles, squares, rectangles and triangles.
Senior Infants Maths Station Work
The Senior Infants have been taking part in weekly Maths stations. One of our recent stations was making patterns with coloured 3d shapes.
6th: Maths: Celebrating 'Pi Day' 2019
6th celebrated 'Pi Day' on 14th March 2019. (3.14)
The children observed various circular shapes in the envrionment. e.g. hoola hoops, lids of various sizes, masking tape, sellotape, glue stick , p.e. cones. etc.
The children measured the approximate measurement of the circumference of the these curcular shapes using a string, then measuring the string against a measuring tape. They then measured the diameter of the smae circlar shapes. The children came to the conclusion that the circumference is always about 3 times the length of the diameter: hence 'pi'=3.14. the ratio of about 3:1
The children then invesetigated pi further by drawing circles in their copies using a compass and a ruler. In pairs they helped each other to measure the circumference the diameter using string and a ruler.

Gymnastics/ Athletics in Junior Infants
In the past term, the Junior Infants have been working on the Gymnastics strand while also developing the fundamental movement skill of walking. We focused on learning three types of rolls - the pencil roll, sausage roll and egg roll. We worked on a number of balances. We used everything we learned over the block to put together simple sequences. This was a great opportunity for the children to work in small groups and to showcase their developments.
The children have been working hard towards receiving our Active School flag. We take regular movement breaks and rainy day breaks. Look at us dancing!
Over the next few weeks, we will be working on the Atlethics strand with a special focus on the fundamental movement skill of running.
